The high level of rice consumption in Nigeria

By Khalifa Yakubu (U19MM1155)

Nigeria has a high consumption rate of rice, with each person consuming an average of 33.4 kilograms in 2021, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This consumption rate has been steadily increasing, with a 4.7% rise in the past decade. The country's rice demand stands at 10.5 million metric tons, while local production only meets about 57% of this demand, resulting in a supply deficit of approximately 3 million metric tons.

Implications

1. Importation: Nigeria relies heavily on imported rice to bridge the supply gap, making it the largest importer of milled rice in Africa.

2. Economic Impact: The high demand for rice contributes to significant economic challenges, including strain on foreign exchange and potential price volatility.
